Coulomb Gap in the Quantum Hall Insulator

We calculate numerically the spectrum of disordered electrons in the lowest Landau level at filling factor 1/5 using the self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation for systems containing up to 400 flux quanta. Special attention is paid to the correct treatment of the q = 0 component of the Coulomb interaction. For sufficiently strong disorder, the system is an insulator at this filling factor. ...

Coulomb Gap in a Doped Semiconductor near the Metal-Insulator Transition: Tunneling Experiment and Scaling Ansatz

Electron tunneling experiments are used to probe Coulomb correlation effects in the single-particle density-of-states (DOS) of boron-doped silicon crystals near the critical density nc of the metal-insulator transition (MIT). At low energies (ε ≤ 0.5 meV), a DOS measurement distinguishes between insulating and metallic samples with densities 10 to 15 % on either side of nc. However, at higher e...

Metal nanoparticle film–based room temperature Coulomb transistor

Single-electron transistors would represent an approach to developing less power-consuming microelectronic devices if room temperature operation and industry-compatible fabrication were possible. We present a concept based on stripes of small, self-assembled, colloidal, metal nanoparticles on a back-gate device architecture, which leads to well-defined and well-controllable transistor character...

Nanofocusing in a metal - insulator - metal gap plasmon waveguide with a 3 - dimensional linear

An Au-SiO2-Au (metal-insulator-metal; MIM) surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) guide is schematically presented in Fig. S1a. As the name “MIM” implies, a structural symmetry exists with respect to the mirror plane that cuts through the center of the SiO2 layer and is parallel to the x–y plane. As a result, supported SPP modes in the guide can be classified into two major types, each with its own di...

Nanofocusing in a metal-insulator-metal gap plasmon waveguide with a three-dimensional linear taper

The development of techniques for efficiently confining photons on the deep sub-wavelength spatial scale will revolutionize scientific research and engineering practices. The efficient coupling of light into extremely small nanofocusing devices has been a major challenge in on-chip nanophotonics because of the need to overcome various loss mechanisms and the on-chip nanofabrication challenges. ...
